    What is Edge Protection?

Edge protection refers to any structure or system that is put in place to prevent workers from falling from an elevated edge, such as a roof or scaffolding. These systems are installed along the edges of a roof to create a secure barrier for workers, equipment, and anyone below. They are essential for construction, maintenance, or roofing projects.

We install guardrails along the perimeter of roofs to create a physical barrier against falls, toe boards at the base of the guardrails to prevent tools or debris from falling off, and secure ladders or platforms to ensure safe entry and exit. Whether you need fixed edge protection systems for long-term use or portable, temporary systems for short-term projects, just give us a call, and we’ll deliver the system to your site.

    Scaffold Edge Protection

We erect a scaffold edge protection system on your site to prevent falls and accidents during work at heights. It consists of guardrails, toe boards, and mid-rails installed on the edges of scaffolding platforms, creating a secure barrier for workers and equipment. By minimizing the risk of falls and preventing tools or materials from falling off the scaffold, edge protection ensures a safer working environment for everyone involved.

Whether it’s for roofing projects, solar panel installation, or exterior painting, scaffold edge protection is a critical safety feature that enhances efficiency and provides peace of mind on every job site.

    Roof Edge Protection Barriers

These safety systems are installed along the roof’s edge to prevent falls from roofs, platforms, or other elevated structures. They are lightweight, easy to install, and highly durable. Roof edge protection barriers are especially important for sloped or elevated roofs, where the risk of falls is higher. By preventing accidents, these barriers protect workers, reduce liabilities, and improve efficiency on job sites. We provide various configurations of roof edge protection barriers, including fixed barriers for long-term use and portable systems for temporary projects.

    Safety Netting

Safety netting is often used in conjunction with edge protection systems to enhance site safety, particularly on large-scale construction projects or areas where guardrails alone may not provide sufficient coverage. It provides a cost-effective solution for protecting areas where other edge protection systems may not be suitable. While edge protection primarily focuses on preventing falls by providing physical barriers, safety netting works as a secondary measure. It is installed below working areas to catch workers or falling objects in the event of an accident.

Height & Spacing Consideration for Edge Protection

When erecting edge protection systems, maintaining the correct height and spacing is crucial to ensure worker safety and compliance with regulations. For roofs with slopes between 10 and 35 degrees, three guardrails are necessary on edge protection systems to prevent falls. However, for gable ends, only two guardrails are required.

The top guardrail should be positioned at least 900mm to 1100mm above the working surface, mid-rails should be installed midway between the top guardrail and the working surface to provide additional protection. Toe boards (also called lowest guardrails), placed at the base, should be at least 150mm above the gutter height. Also, the posts supporting the edge protection system should be evenly spaced, often at no more than 2.5 metres apart, to maintain stability and withstand applied forces.

STM Enterprises ensures these safety measures are carefully followed when erecting scaffolds and edge protection systems on-site. Our only goal is to prioritise the safety of workers working at varying heights.
